  1. The late Dr. Bill Bright of Campus Crusade for Christ told this story of a famous

  3. oil field called Yates Pool:

  5. ΓÇ£During the Depression this field was a sheep ranch owned by a man named

  7. Yates. Mr. Yates wasnΓÇÖt able to make enough on his ranching operation to pay

  9. the principal and interest on the mortgage, so he was in danger of losing his 
  10. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  11. ranch. With little money for clothes or food, his family (like many others) had to 
  12. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  13. live on government subsidy.
  14. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  15. ΓÇ£Day after day, as he grazed his sheep over those rolling West Texas hills, he was 
  16. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  17. no doubt greatly troubled about how he would pay his bills. Then a 
  18. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  19. seismographic crew from an oil company came into the area and told him there 
  20. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  21. might be oil on his land. They asked permission to drill a wildcat well, and he 
  22. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  23. signed a lease contract.

  25. ΓÇ£At 1,115 feet they struck a huge oil reserve. The first well came in at 80,000 
  26. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  27. barrels a day. Many subsequent wells were more than twice as large. In fact, 
  28. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  29. thirty years after the discovery, a government test of one of the wells showed it 
  30. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  31. still had the potential flow of 125,000 barrels of oil a day.

  33. ΓÇ£And Mr. Yates owned it all. The day he purchased the land he had received the 
  34. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  35. oil and mineral rights. Yet heΓÇÖd been living on relief. He was a multi-millionaire 
  36. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  37. living in poverty. The problem? He didnΓÇÖt know the oil was there even though he 
  38. --- RECORDSEPARATOR ---
  39. owned it.ΓÇ¥
